Cabinet Clears ₹3,076 Cr HCL-Foxconn Semiconductor Unit.

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for a significant joint venture between Indian technology firm HCL and Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn to establish a semiconductor manufacturing facility near the upcoming international airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. The project is valued at ₹3,076 crore.

This joint venture represents the sixth project to receive clearance under the government's ambitious ₹76,000-crore India Semiconductor Mission, aimed at building a robust domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem.

The planned facility will specialize in manufacturing display driver chips, essential components used in controlling screens across a wide range of electronic devices. This includes mobile phones, laptops, personal computers (PCs), automotive displays, and various other display-enabled technologies.

The plant is designed with a capacity to process 20,000 wafers per month, which is expected to translate into an estimated monthly output of 36 million units of display driver chips.

Minister of Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted the transformative potential of the new unit. He stated that the facility is anticipated to attract substantial display panel manufacturing to India, further integrating the country into the global electronics supply chain.

Minister Vaishnaw added that the facility's output of display driver chips is projected to meet 40 per cent of India's current domestic demand for these components. Additionally, the plant will cater to Foxconn's global requirements, thereby positioning India as a key player in the international display ecosystem.
