Apple Collaborates with Clean Max for Installation of 14.4 MW Rooftop Solar in India

Apple, renowned for its innovation in consumer electronics such as iPhones and iPads, has ventured into sustainable energy solutions by investing in over 14 MW of rooftop solar capacities across its six industrial sites in India. This partnership with Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions underscores Apple's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by the end of the decade.

The tech giant has significantly ramped up its clean energy efforts, with more than 18 GW of clean electricity now powering its global operations and manufacturing supply chain. This marks a remarkable increase from triple the amount reported in 2020.

As part of the collaboration, Clean Max has successfully completed the installation of 14.4 MW of rooftop solar installations in India. This initiative is projected to mitigate approximately 207,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions throughout their operational lifespan, according to the renewable energy provider specializing in the commercial and industrial (C&I) segment.

The partnership operates under an innovative business model, wherein the environmental benefits derived from the financed projects will aid Apple in addressing emissions associated with its corporate operations in India.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Apple highlighted its joint venture with Clean Max, stating, "To address its growing corporate operations in India, Apple has also embarked on a joint venture with leading renewable developer CleanMax to invest in a portfolio of six rooftop solar projects with a total size of 14.4 MW."

The additional capacity generated through this initiative will power Apple's offices, two retail stores, and other operations in India, providing a localized solution for sustainable energy needs. Apple had previously achieved 100 percent renewable energy for its global corporate operations in 2018.

Acknowledging the significance of clean energy in reducing carbon footprint, Apple's broader strategy includes encouraging its global suppliers to adopt clean electricity and strive for carbon neutrality across all Apple-related operations by 2030.

Clean Max Managing Director Kuldeep Jain expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing its milestone significance in their sustainability journey. He noted the growing interest from consumer brands in similar joint ventures, underscoring a shift towards sustainability across industries.

The collaboration between Apple and Clean Max exemplifies the importance of cross-sector partnerships in addressing pressing environmental challenges. With Clean Max boasting a 2 GW renewable operating portfolio, the company develops projects on a turnkey basis, providing power under long-term Power Purchase Agreements.
