Work on Water Metro project to begin in June.
Work on the ₹747-crore Water Metro will begin next month. A review meeting of Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) chaired by Managing Director Elias George recently decided to start the pre-construction activities to expedite the implementation of the project in a time-bound manner.
The Water Metro will be developed as a feeder service to the Kochi metro by setting up 38 jetties connecting 10 island communities in the city covering the 76-km route network.
The authorities have identified 16 routes through the Kochi backwaters connecting the islands surrounding the city.
It is learnt that Aecom Consortium will be the general consultant responsible for integrating construction activities. The appointment of the consultant will be finalised at the meeting of the board of directors to be held in the last week of this month.
To speed up activities, KMRL is planning to commence construction work at the existing boat jetties. The final decision on some boat jetties will be taken on the basis of panchayat officials’ views as the Water Metro passes through certain panchayat boundaries.
Meanwhile, replying to the calling attention motion by Hibi Eden, MLA, in the Assembly on Thursday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the work on the project would be launched soon after obtaining environmental clearance.
