Work on three schools begins in Afghanistan

Sharan: The construction of three school buildings, with an estimated cost of over 100 US dollars, started in Argon district of eastern Paktika province, officials said.

Muhammad Shafiq Himmat, Deputy Director of Paktika Education department said that the scheme incorporated three primary school buildings including one for girls.

Each school would consist of six classrooms and two offices. One and half acres of land offered by locals were allocated for the school construction, he acclaimed.

Himmat said the school could accommodate hundreds of primary school students in six months when the construction work was to be completed. He added the students were currently studying in open air and in tents.

The budget for the project was specified by the Ministry of Counter Narcotics, he added. Haji Ibrahim, head of the district tribal council in Argon district, said lack of school buildings topped the list of education challenges locals faced in the area. He hoped the three school buildings would help eliminate existing problems.

He added, construction of four more school buildings was ongoing with funds from UNICEF and would be accomplished in one year. Azizullah, Argon district chief, praised the construction venture. There are 114,000 boys and girls studying in around 300 schools in the entire Paktika province, education officials informed. 65 schools were properly housed while construction work was carried out on 30 schools.
