Karnataka Aims to Complete Central Spine Project Within 11 Months.
Work has finally begun on the long-delayed Central Spine public space development project at Nava Nagar, in the heart of Hubballi-Dharwad. The project, funded with ₹3 crore by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) and executed by the HD-BRTS company, is expected to be completed within 11 months.
Nava Nagar, which has rapidly developed into a densely populated locality, will benefit from the project’s focus on creating a people-friendly environment with facilities for senior citizens and children. The initiative was originally designed to provide public amenities and curb encroachment on vacant land in the area.
Sources said the project faced delays due to difficult site conditions and disputes. While the work order was issued to the contractor in July 2025, changes to the project pushed the start date to December 2025.
R. Gudaraddi, General Manager of HD-BRTS, told TOI that construction work on drains and roads on both sides of the 350-metre stretch, starting from the BRTS bus station, is already underway. “Facilities will include a cycle track, children’s play area, jogging and walking tracks, and seating areas for senior citizens. Electric poles will be installed at the median. The project ensures comprehensive development of vacant spaces and will serve as a landmark, offering vibrant and inclusive facilities for all age groups,” he said.
Manjunath Burli, HDMC corporator of Ward No. 23, added that the project, after much delay, is now moving forward. “It is designed to enhance the liveability of the city and provide quality recreational infrastructure while promoting eco-friendly mobility for residents,” he said.
