Work on Kherwadi flyover to wrap up by end of March.

There is some good news in store for motorists. If all goes as per plan, they will no longer have to battle heavy traffic jams on the northbound stretch of Western Express Highway (WEH) between Bandra Reclamation and Kherwadi signal as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has set the end of March as their deadline to open the flyover.

Confirming the news, a senior MMRDA official, on condition of anonymity, said, 'We have time till April to finish constructing the flyover. But construction work on the north-bound stretch is in full swing 24/7 and we aim to complete the work by the end of March. Our intention is to complete the work at the earliest to tackle the issue of traffic jams at the north-bound stretch of WEH between Bandra Reclamation and Kherwadi signal,' he explains.

During peak hours in the evening, traffic jams occur on the WEH's northbound stretch as well as the southbound stretch, thus inconveniencing motorists. On some days, traffic on the northbound stretch extends up to Bandra Reclamation.

Recently, mid-day visited the WEH, this reporter found that construction work on the northbound stretch was in full progress, while flyover girders were also spotted at the project site. Traffic on the WEH has already been diverted to the 600-metre stretch on the service road, on the west side of the highway.

Moreover, the traffic police will keep one lane of the southbound arm open to northbound traffic during peak hours. The 580-metre long northbound arm is identical to the southbound arm with three lanes and is set to clear traffic congestion at the Kherwadi junction once complete.
