The Uttar Pradesh government has officially notified the creation of a new "State Capital Region" (SCR), modeled after the National Capital Region (NCR). Governor Anandiben Patel has approved the establishment of the Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region Development Authority (UP-SCRDA) to oversee the initiative.
The Housing and Urban Planning Department issued the notification, which designates the State Capital Region to include Lucknow and the neighboring districts of Hardoi, Sitapur, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Barabanki. The total area covered by the SCR will be 27,826 square kilometers.
The UP-SCRDA will be responsible for managing development projects and resources within this area. The authority will be chaired by the Chief Minister, with the Chief Secretary serving as vice-chairman. Members will also include the Additional Chief Secretary for Housing and Urban Planning, Divisional Commissioners of Lucknow and Ayodhya, District Magistrates of the affected districts, and Vice-Chairmen of various development authorities.
This project was initiated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in September 2022. Addressing the need for organized development amidst growing population pressures, he stated, "With increasing interest from people relocating to the region and rising complaints about unplanned development, it is crucial to establish the Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region to manage future requirements effectively."
