Tata Steel Commissions 8 MTPA Capacity Expansion in Odisha.
Tata Steel has completed the expansion of its Kalinganagar plant, increasing its capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA with the commissioning of India’s largest blast furnace. The company invested ₹27,000 crore in this Phase II expansion, enhancing production capabilities to meet the rising demands of industries such as automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, and defence.
The expansion solidifies Odisha as Tata Steel's largest investment hub, with cumulative investments exceeding ₹1 lakh crore over the last decade. Tata Steel CEO and Managing Director, TV Narendran, hailed the new blast furnace as a milestone in capacity, technology, and sustainability, reinforcing Tata Steel’s leadership in high-end, value-added steel products.
With a volume of 5,870 m³, the new blast furnace incorporates cutting-edge features for efficiency and eco-friendliness, including four top combustion stoves and a dry gas cleaning plant for energy recovery. Additionally, it will operate with a zero-process water discharge system and rainwater harvesting.
The Kalinganagar Phase II expansion also includes a pellet plant, coke plant, and cold rolling mill, all designed with advanced technologies and sustainable practices. This development marks a significant boost in Tata Steel’s production capacity and commitment to environmentally friendly processes.
