State okays 336 hectare land for Amravati airport.

In a major development for Vidarbha region, the state cabinet recently approved a proposal to hand over 336 hectares of land at Belora near Amravati to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for developing the existing airport.

The idea of a new airport was floated during the tenure of ex-President Pratibha Patil. She was a resident of this western Vidarbha city at the time. It was proposed that the state-run Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) would execute the project. However, as per the new plan, it has now been decided that AAI would develop the airport at its own cost and complete the work in three years. The state would give the land on a 60-year lease and at a monthly ground rent of Rs.1 lakh would be charged from the AAI.
