Skoda Volkswagen Group Expands Pune R&D to Launch Global Car and Software Hub in India.

Škoda Volkswagen Group is ramping up its presence in India, positioning the country as a key global engineering hub. The company’s latest move is a 33,000 sq ft expansion of its R&D facility in Baner, Pune, part of its “Make in India, for India and the world” strategy. This expansion marks a strategic shift from mere localisation to original product development for global markets.

The new Baner facility, complementing the Technology Centre Pune (TCP) established in Chakan in 2019, will accommodate over 250 engineers. With this, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India’s total engineering workforce will exceed 450, focusing on the design of platforms, software, and digital features for both domestic and international markets.

“This is about giving India a stronger role in global development,” said Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India. He described the expansion as giving the country a “Voice of India” within the group’s global ecosystem.

The move underscores the company’s commitment to leveraging India’s engineering talent for products that serve not only the local market but also Volkswagen Group’s worldwide operations.
