Siemens opens transformer plant at Aurangabad

Mumbai: Infrastructure and industry solutions provider Siemens commissioned its Rs 25-crore high-voltage instrument transformer factory at Aurangabad, which is its ninth manufacturing facility in Maharashtra.

The new facility will manufacture a range of instrument transformers such as SF6 insulated current transformers, voltage transformers and oil-filled capacitor voltage transformers up to 765 kV.

Instrument transformers are used to transform high current or voltage to measurable values. They provide standardised, useable levels of current or voltage in a variety of power monitoring, protection and measurement applications.

The factory has manufacturing capacity of more than 3,000 instrument transformers a year, with adequate scope for expansion.

Dr Armin Bruck, Managing Director, Siemens Ltd, said instrument transformers were an important component of high voltage sub-stations, accounting for about 8 to 10 per cent of switchyard’s total cost.

“We are now equipped to provide the complete basket of high quality products for high voltage sub-stations,” he said.

The factory has an in-built testing facility with test equipment imported from Haefely, Switzerland.
Another feature is that the current and potential transformers will be manufactured without any use of paper or oil, thereby reducing production time by about four weeks, the company said.

Siemens in India, which comprises 19 legal entities with a business volume aggregating about Rs 11,000 crore, operates in the core business segments of energy, industry transportation, healthcare, information technology, communication and lighting.
It has 18 manufacturing plants and a network of around 500 channel partners in India.
