Russia-Bangladesh sign nuclear power agreement

Dhaka: Bangladesh signed an agreement with Russia for setting up nuclear power plants in Bangladesh.

The nuclear unit will be based at northern Rooppur Nuclear Power Project. Bangladesh has signed similar deals with the United States, China and France.

Bnagladesh had planned for setting up two nuclear power units each having the generation capacity of 1,000MW as it faced a power shortage of more than 1,000MW from its existing gas reserve. It will not be in a position to set up any gas-based power plants after 2010–2012.

The country will seek soft-term loans from international donors for completing the proposed project. It plans to complete its running nuclear projects by 2015.
