Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Hails Station Redevelopment Scheme as World's Largest

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) as the most extensive railway station redevelopment initiative globally, emphasizing its unprecedented scale in history. Addressing media representatives on Monday, Vaishnaw provided updates on the progress of the scheme, lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pivotal role in laying the foundation stone for 553 stations and inaugurating a redeveloped station under the initiative. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated or laid the foundation stone for 1500 road-over-bridges (ROBs) and underpasses, furthering infrastructure development efforts.

Initiated by the railway ministry in 2023, ABSS aims to identify and shortlist stations for redevelopment to enhance passenger facilities and amenities. To date, 1321 stations out of 7000 have been selected for redevelopment, with many projects at various stages of construction. With the foundation stone laid for 553 stations by the prime minister, construction work is set to commence swiftly.

Vaishnaw underscored the prime minister's growth strategy, emphasizing significant public investment that has exceeded 30 percent of GDP. The minister highlighted the exponential growth in railway capital expenditure (Capex), which has surged to 2 lakh 52 thousand crore, attributing visible benefits on the ground to this investment surge.

Providing insights into railway infrastructure expansion, Vaishnaw noted a substantial increase in track laying speed from 4 km per day (2004-2014) to 15 km per day presently. Furthermore, electrification efforts have resulted in electrifying 41,000 km of railway track over the past decade, showcasing remarkable progress.

Vaishnaw emphasized the government's commitment to constructing flyovers and underpasses, citing a significant rise in construction rates from 400 to over 1000 annually. He highlighted the complexity of building world-class stations and credited government reforms for facilitating scheme implementation.

In a departure from previous practices, Vaishnaw highlighted the equitable treatment of stations regardless of size or location, demonstrating the government's commitment to comprehensive development initiatives. He showcased ongoing redevelopment work at stations across the country, underscoring the government's dedication to enhancing railway infrastructure nationwide.
