Panel to regulate technical textiles use

New Delhi: The Government has set up an inter-ministerial committee to look into the feasibility of regulating the use of technical textiles. The committee comprises officials from the ministries of roads and transport, defence, home affairs, health and family welfare and environment, the Textiles Minister, Mr Shankersinh Vaghela, said on Friday at a CII seminar.

He said the panel would suggest a regulatory framework to promote the use of technical textiles. This would cover the use of geosynthetics in infrastructure projects, fire retardant textiles in public places, use of non-woven disposables in hospitals and protective gear for industrial workers.

Technical textiles account for a quarter of all fibre consumed in the world and up to 40 per cent of the textile industry in industrialised countries, he said.
