Pakistan team inspect Baglihar hydroelectric project
New Delhi: A Pakistani team, led by Indus Water Commissioner Syed Jamaat Ali Shah, inspected Baglihar hydroelectric project, being constructed by India on Chenab river in Ramban district of occupied Kashmir.
The Pakistani team wanted to see whether India has carried out the modifications recommended by Professor Raymond Lafittee, a neutral expert, appointed by the World Bank in the project.
The neutral expert was appointed when Pakistan raised serious objections over the design of the project. The recommendations are binding on India. Syed Jamaat Ali Shah inspected the dam as well as its reservoir and took measurements at Chanderkote in Ramban district, the Indian daily, 'Tribune,' reported.
'During their visit in 2005, the Pakistani team had raised some objections about the height of the dam as well as the reservoir. The team especially visited these spots today ', the daily, quoting Power Development Corporation (PDC) Managing Director Shantmanu, who is accompanying the Indian team, said.
He stressed the need for strengthening the level of confidence between both the countries for the success of various initiatives, aimed at heralding lasting peace and better understanding in the region, the daily quoting him said.
The Water Commissioner will submit a report to the government of Pakistan about his observations on the project and the talks he held with Indian side on controversial Kishanganga project. The Pakistani team will leave here for home on Friday.
