Pak: Work at new airport enters second phase

Islamabad: The construction work at the multi-million dollar project of new airport for the federal capital has entered the second phase.

According to the sources from Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the second phase of the project includes construction of runway, taxiway, emergency runway, apron, and airside infrastructure.

The second phase of the project, which is to be completed in next 24 months, has begun, the sources said. They said that in the first phase the preparation of site and filling of land for the runway has been completed through compaction process.

The project which is scheduled to be completed by end of 2010, after completion would offer international standard facilities to 6.5 million passengers and handling 100,000 metric tonnes of cargo annually. At the new airport a significant chunk of land has been earmarked for commercial activities like duty free shops, hotel and convention centre, food courts, leisure and recreational facilities.
