Northern Railways Plans Overhaul of Ghaziabad Railway Station

Northern Railway has embarked on the ambitious redevelopment of the Ghaziabad railway station, commencing with the construction of a two-storey station building and a basement. The project, which has been allocated Rs. 337 crore, includes the development of an eight-metre-wide foot-over bridge to enhance connectivity.

A senior railway official shared details of the ongoing construction, stating, "The construction has started for the station buildings. We will build a quarter and a training hostel. Along with that, the designs for the foot-over bridge and a 72-metre-wide concourse are being made. A roof would cover the entire platform."

The completion deadline for the project has been set for August 2025. Spanning across 1.5 lakh sq m, the Ghaziabad railway station witnesses the daily movement of 200 trains, catering to around 50,000 commuters daily.

The redevelopment is part of the Indian Railways' Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, focusing on equipping 1,308 stations with modern amenities. Under the scheme's first phase, 508 stations are undergoing reconstruction, with 71 stations managed by the Northern Railway. The comprehensive plan encompasses the installation of lifts, new escalators, rainwater harvesting systems, sewage treatment, water storage structures, and underground tanks.

An official emphasized, "The scheme aims to transform the stations into vibrant transit centres that offer a safe, fast, inclusive, efficient, and sustainable way of travelling." A total of 14 stations in the Delhi division are slated for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, including Rohtak, Jind, Shamli, Mansa, Narela, Bahadurgarh, Modinagar, Narwana, Sabzi Mandi, Pataudi Road, Sonipat, Delhi Cantonment, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad.

As part of the broader initiative, the Indian Railways aims to focus on laying new lines, achieving 100% electrification, and enhancing safety measures for both assets and passengers. The scheme envisions redeveloping stations as city centers, providing modern passenger amenities, improving traffic circulation, enhancing parking spaces, and creating infrastructure to support individuals with disabilities.
