NHDA to construct 5,000 housing units
Colombo: The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) will construct 5,000 housing units to overcome housing problems of families below the poverty line. Moves are under way to renovate existing houses and provide latrine and pipeborne water facilities to beneficiaries.
The NHDA plans to utilise low cost technology and traditional construction methods for the construction of the houses. The beneficiary families are to be selected through the village committee (Gemi Kamitu), NHDA sources said.
Rs. 100,000 will be allocated to construct new houses while Rs. 50,000 will be allocated for the renovation of existing housing units.
Rs. 200 million will be spent on the entire project. The treasury will spend Rs. 140 million while the NHDA will spend Rs. 60 million.
The NHDA has planned to construct 5,000 housing units by the end of this year, although it was decided to construct 3,000 housing units earlier.
