India Attracts ₹1 Lakh Crore Semiconductor Investment Proposals under Semicon 2.0

India’s semiconductor ambitions received a significant boost as companies proposed investments worth around ₹1 lakh crore ($11–12 billion) under the government’s Semicon 2.0 programme. Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw disclosed the investment pipeline during SEMICON India 2026 on September 17.

The proposed investments cover several parts of the semiconductor value chain, including chip manufacturing equipment, materials, specialty gases, chemicals, wafers, advanced packaging and ATMP facilities. This is important because India is seeking to build a complete semiconductor ecosystem rather than focusing only on fabrication plants.

The government expects many of these investments to materialize over the next two to three years, although several proposals still require corporate board or shareholder approvals. The companies involved are expected to announce further details once those approvals are completed.

Major industry announcements have also strengthened the outlook. Applied Materials announced a $5 billion India investment plan, while companies including Lam Research and Tata Electronics are expanding semiconductor-related activities in the country.

Semicon 2.0 has a government outlay of ₹1.275 lakh crore and focuses on chip design, fabrication, equipment and materials, advanced packaging, research and talent development. The programme reflects India’s broader push to establish itself as a major global semiconductor manufacturing and supply-chain hub.
