Mumbai, India's financial capital, is gearing up for the inauguration of its first underground metro line, known as the Aqua Line, scheduled to commence operations on July 24. The announcement was made by Vinod Tawde, General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in a social media post.
In his statement, Tawde highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to enhancing the lives of Mumbaikars by improving city transit. The Aqua Line, spanning 33.5 kilometers, will traverse key areas including Colaba, Bandra, and SEEPZ (Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone). With 27 stops from Aarey Colony to Cuffe Parade, the metro is expected to significantly alleviate urban congestion and streamline commuter travel across Mumbai.
Stations along the Aqua Line include prominent locations such as Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, CST Metro, Kalbadevi, and various others catering to major hubs and residential areas throughout the city.
In a separate development, the Maharashtra government recently announced plans to expedite the Mumbai Metro 3 project, aiming for completion by December 2024. Initially slated for September 2024, the project's first phase will connect SEEPZ to Bandra Kurla Complex, enhancing connectivity and easing commuter access across Mumbai's bustling corridors.
The Mumbai Metro 3 project, also known as Line 3, has achieved significant milestones with 98% of civil works completed and overall station construction reaching 97%. Tunneling operations are fully concluded, while system works, depot civil works, and mainline track works are nearing completion.
The introduction of the metro system has garnered substantial interest among commuters, evident from the escalating ridership numbers. Recent reports from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation indicate a surge in daily ridership figures, peaking at 222,290 passengers on July 26, 2023, underscoring the growing demand for efficient urban transportation solutions in Mumbai.
