Mulund pool gets BMC nod to use bore well water.

BMC has granted permission to Kalidas swimming pool in Mulund to use bore well and ring well water and has urged other pools in the city to follow suit. The civic body claims that this will result in saving up to 50 lakh litres of BMC-provided water per month, which can be utilised elsewhere.

The swimmers’ federation presented this proposal before BMC’s Improvements Committee chairman Prakash Gangadhare recently, who gave his nod for the project. Gangadhare said: 'The water saved by BMC can now be utilised by citizens for other purposes.'

When asked whether the bore well and ring well water could also be utilised elsewhere instead of using it for a recreational activity like swimming, Gangadhare said he will welcome such proposals if initiative is taken by citizens.

Gangadhare said he sees no point in discarding this proposal, as filtration machinery worth several lakhs has been installed at the pool already, which will spoil for lack of use.

Kalidas Swimmers Federation was forced to close down their swimming pool by mid-September due to water shortage owing to scanty rainfall. Due to the heavy financial loss endured by the pool, the federation came up with the idea of using water from two bore wells and a ring well in their compound, to run the pool, instead of depending on BMC-provided water.

The swimming pool currently consumes 32.5 lakh litres of BMC water per month. The federation discovered that the capacity of the bore wells is to provide up to 64.5 lakh liters of water per month, twice the amount required to run the pool. The federation tested the bore well water and found it fit for swimming.
