L&T to execute 28 Lift Irrigation projects for Odisha

Government of Odisha has signed MoU with L&T for 28 new Lift Irrigation projects, to invest Rs 646cr. State government has prepared a plan to cover command area of about 2.14 lakh Ha. through Cluster Mega Lift Irrigation schemes under Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts on Turn Key Basis by utilizing available surplus water in different river basins in rain-fed areas of this State. Each lift scheme will cover an area of 500 to 2000 ha. close to river on either side and also close to the existing reservoirs.

174 nos. of such lift schemes have been identified by the Department of Water Resources in 15 clusters with an estimated cost of 3000 crore rupees. In the first phase, 5 clusters have been taken implementation. EPC contract for two clusters in Tel river basin consisting of 28 nos. of Lift Irrigation Projects with an outlay of 646.56 crore rupees covering an area of 35,400 ha. in drought prone districts of Kaiahandi, Boiangir, Subarnapur & Boudh have been awarded to M/s Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T Ltd.), Chennai for execution. These projects will be completed within a period of 30 months from the date of agreement. L& T Ltd. will also do the operation and maintenance of the schemes for a period of ñve years after completion of the projects. Looking at the experience and expertise of L&T Ltd. in this field, we are confident that the ­projects will be completed on time and farmers wiil reap the benefit.

The bidding of the balance 3 clusters of phase-I, consisting of 40 Lift having Command Area of about 50,000 ha. will be made in two months time. The balance 3 clusters will irrigate up land areas in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Deogarh & Angui districts in Indravati, Kolab river Basin areas and around Hirakud and Rengali reservoirs.
The Mega Lift Projects in balance 10 clusters will be executed in phases.

Provision of Rs. 200 crores has been made in the State budget outlay for the financial year 2013-14 for execution of Mega Lift Schemes.
