L&T, Japanese firm win railway electrification contract.

Larsen and Toubro Ltd, India's largest engineering and construction firm, and Japanese firm Sojitz Corp. have jointly won a railway electrification contract from the railways ministry, Sojitz said in a statement recently.

The project involves electrification of a 915 km section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and is valued at approximately Rs. 2,633 crore.

This is the largest single railway electrification project to date, the statement said. L&T did not issue a statement.

Under the contract, the 915 km section between Rewari, Haryana, and Vadodara, Gujarat, will be electrified. The project is scheduled to begin in 2014, with Sojitz and L&T constructing 16 traction substations and install overhead electric wires.

L&T's management has in the past said that the company is expecting more orders from the domestic sector, and public sector orders are slated to increase.

This is the second project for Sojitz and L&T following a joint contract received in 2013 for civil and track work on a 626km section of the western freight corridor connecting Rewari, Haryana, and Ikbalgarh, Gujarat.
