Lanka: Rural electricity power schemes completed

Colombo: The Kempane and Pepolwatuyaya rural electricity schemes in the Kolonna electorate completed at a cost of Rs. 17 million under an ADB loan scheme was commissioned by Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne recently providing relief to nearly 500 families struggling without electricity facilities for the past several years.

The Ministry in a release said this facility would be a great boon to small and medium scale industrialists in the area.

The Ministry has now provided electricity facilities for nearly 81 per cent of the country's population.

A five year plan is being implemented to cater to another 19 per cent of the balance population. The Ministry launched 7,400 new rural electricity schemes last year of which 4,200 have already been commissioned.
