India's apparel manufacturing industry is experiencing a significant uplift as global buyers begin to re-route their sourcing from Bangladesh to India, largely due to ongoing political instability in the neighboring country. This shift is enabling Indian manufacturers to meet international export commitments and seize new opportunities.
Sabu Jacob, Managing Director of Kitex Garments, highlighted this trend to businessline, noting that approximately 80% of Bangladesh's apparel exports traditionally cater to the European market, primarily benefiting from duty-free concessions. However, India's recent Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the UK, coupled with anticipated duty-free access to the European Union, is expected to create substantial opportunities for Indian manufacturers to capture a significant portion of this market share.
Furthermore, India's existing trade agreements with the United States, which offer either zero or very low duties, are set to enhance the country's competitiveness and generate a surge in employment opportunities within the sector. Jacob emphasized that the Indian government views the apparel industry as a vital source of employment, reinforcing the strategic importance of this burgeoning shift in global supply chains. This confluence of factors positions India's apparel industry for robust growth and increased international prominence.
