Coimbatore: An industrial promotion council, under the guidance of the district administration, has been formed for the textile industry in Karur, which will initiate co-ordinated measures aimed at the industry development. The forum, Karur Textiles Promotional Council, comprising representatives of different textile trade bodies and local officials of the State and Central Government departments concerned with the textile industry, will work in unison with the local industry and the government departments to mee the needs of the industry.

The council, being headed by the District Collector as the Chairman, will initiate measures for the industry promotion by identifying bottlenecks and suggesting suitable remedial measures.

Frequent interaction

According to a communication from the Karur Textile Manufacturer Exporters' Association, a joint meeting of the various textile industry bodies held under the leadership of the District Collector, Mr Chandramohan, on July 21, which led to the formation of the council, has also decided to have frequent interaction with the district administration for the growth of the industry.

Labour shortage

The association, in a press release, had stated that in the meeting, it was decided to address the issue of shortage of skilled labour for the textile industry by initiating a pilot project to identify and enrol people willing to take up tailoring jobs and the project would cover a cluster of villages within 50-km radius of Karur.

While the local industry would donate tailoring machines for the training programme, the State textiles and handlooms office at Karur, in association with the Deputy Director of the Textiles Committee, would prepare a detailed module for training. The training would be imparted under the supervision of the personnel from the private industry so that the training meets the standards followed by the industry.
