Karnataka Clears ₹7,247 Crore Port and Shipyard Projects

The Karnataka government has approved port and shipyard projects involving an estimated investment of ₹7,247 crore, providing a major boost to the state’s maritime infrastructure and industrial development plans.

The largest component is a proposed ₹6,925 crore port and shipyard project at Manki in Uttara Kannada district. The project is proposed to be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model, with a concession period of 45 years.

The development is expected to strengthen Karnataka’s maritime infrastructure and create additional capacity to support cargo movement, shipbuilding and related marine industries. The project could also improve logistics connectivity for industries located in Karnataka and neighbouring regions by providing additional infrastructure along the state’s Arabian Sea coastline.

The DBFOT structure envisages private-sector participation in financing, developing and operating the facility during the concession period, reducing the requirement for direct government capital expenditure while bringing private investment into the maritime sector.

The proposed Manki development is significant given its location in Uttara Kannada, a coastal district with access to important shipping routes. Development of port and shipyard infrastructure could generate opportunities for ancillary industries, logistics operators, engineering companies and maritime service providers.

The Cabinet approval represents an important step in taking the projects forward. Further milestones, including concession arrangements, statutory and environmental clearances, financial closure and construction schedules, will determine the pace of implementation.

With an overall investment of ₹7,247 crore, the approved projects represent a substantial addition to Karnataka’s infrastructure investment pipeline and its efforts to expand maritime-led economic activity.
