Kandla’s Green Hydrogen Demo Project to Launch by July.
A 1 MW green hydrogen demonstration plant is under construction at Kandla Port, Gujarat, and is set to begin supplies by July 2025, according to Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA).
The project, developed at a cost of ₹13 crore, will primarily fuel hydrogen-powered buses operated by DPA in Gandhidham, about 15 km from Kandla Port. “We have placed an order with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for this plant. Electrolyser testing at L&T’s Hazira facility is complete, and they will soon be installed at Kandla,” Singh said.
Hydrogen for Green Mobility & Port Operations
The project aims to support two key initiatives:
- Fueling 11 hydrogen-powered buses under a green mobility project in collaboration with NTPC.
- Generating electricity through fuel cells to power port and jetty areas.
Kandla: A Green Hydrogen Hub
This demonstration plant is part of a larger green hydrogen push at Kandla. DPA has allotted 3,400 acres to four major companies—Reliance Green Hydrogen, L&T Green Energy Tech, Welspun New Energy, and AM Green Hydrogen—to set up facilities producing 5.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
Beyond domestic use, green hydrogen and its derivatives like methanol and green ammonia will be exported and used as fuel for vessels at the port. Kandla, Tuticorin, and Paradip have been identified as key ports for developing hydrogen hubs in India.
