Jammu and Kashmir approves major solid waste management project in Srinagar.

Omar Abdullah has approved the establishment of an 800 tonnes-per-day Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) project at Achan in Srinagar, officials said.

The decision was taken during the sixth meeting of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, with the aim of strengthening scientific waste management infrastructure in Srinagar and ensuring environmentally sustainable processing and disposal of municipal solid waste. An official spokesperson said the project is intended to improve urban sanitation and promote efficient waste handling practices in the city.

The proposed ISWM project, estimated at ₹361 crore, will enhance Srinagar’s waste processing capacity through modern systems for collection, segregation, treatment and disposal of solid waste. Officials said the facility is expected to support cleaner urban management while addressing the growing waste generation challenges in the region.
