Indian Railways Sanctions ₹182 Crore Upgrade for Berhampur railway station.

The East Coast Railway has floated a tender for the redevelopment of Berhampur railway station, with the first phase estimated to cost ₹182.57 crore, officials said.

Earlier in April, the Indian Railways had sanctioned around ₹300 crore for the station’s overall redevelopment. The station, one of the oldest on the Howrah–Chennai main line, is set for a major infrastructure overhaul aimed at modernising passenger facilities and improving operational capacity.

The redevelopment plan includes the addition of three new rail lines and four platforms, along with a wide air concourse. Other planned upgrades feature a quick watering system, escalators and lifts, and enhanced surveillance infrastructure.

Officials said the first phase will be executed under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model and is targeted for completion within 20 months.

Berhampur railway station currently handles more than 162 trains connecting major cities across India and serves around 25,000 passengers daily.

Welcoming the development, the Southern Odisha Joint Railway Development Action Committee thanked Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the long-pending redevelopment demand. Committee convener Saroj Ranjan Pattnaik expressed hope that the project would be completed within the scheduled timeline.

The committee has also urged the government to approve additional projects in the region, including a coaching depot at Golanthara near Berhampur and new railway lines connecting Berhampur–Rairakhol, Gopalpur–Rayagada, and Gopalpur–Talcher, aimed at improving rail connectivity in underserved areas.
