Indian Oil Approves ₹2,449 Crore Kochi–Thoothukudi Natural Gas Pipeline

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. has approved an investment of ₹2,449 crore for development of the Kochi–Thoothukudi natural gas pipeline, strengthening gas transmission infrastructure across southern India. The proposed pipeline will extend for approximately 424.65 km, connecting Kochi in Kerala with Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, and will pass through key southern regions including Kanyakumari.The pipeline is designed for a total gas transportation capacity of 6.84 million standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD). Of this, around 1.71 MMSCMD is expected to be available as common-carrier capacity, improving access for multiple industrial and commercial users along the route.

The project is expected to support rising demand for natural gas from industries, city gas distribution networks and other energy-intensive consumers in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It also aligns with the Government of India’s broader push to expand pipeline infrastructure and improve access to cleaner fuels through faster approvals and streamlined project development.The Kochi–Thoothukudi pipeline is expected to generate opportunities for EPC contractors, pipeline manufacturers, compressor and metering system suppliers, civil contractors, automation companies and gas infrastructure service providers.Once completed, the project will strengthen regional energy connectivity and support India’s transition toward a more diversified, gas-based energy economy.
