Indian Coast Guard and Jindal Steel & Power Sign MoU to Boost Indigenous Shipbuilding
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Jindal Steel & Power (JSP) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the supply of indigenous marine-grade steel for shipbuilding projects. The agreement, signed in New Delhi, underscores a concerted effort to boost indigenization in India's shipbuilding industry.
The Ministry of Defence issued a press release stating that the MoU outlines a framework to ensure the consistent quality, grades, and dimensions of marine-grade steel. This commitment to domestic sourcing aligns with the government's 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives, promoting self-reliance in the defence sector.
Under the MoU, designated steel plants have been identified to manufacture the specific grades of steel required for shipbuilding, ensuring a timely and reliable supply. This partnership aims to enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Coast Guard while reducing reliance on imported materials.
The MoU signing ceremony, attended by senior officers from the Indian Coast Guard and representatives from Jindal Steel & Power, highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing complex security challenges. This collaboration with JSP, a leading steel manufacturer in India, demonstrates a strategic approach to fostering innovation and efficiency in domestic shipbuilding.
Additionally, on May 6, the Indian Coast Guard signed a contract with Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited for the procurement of ten 30 mm CRN-91 guns, which are already in use and indigenously manufactured by Ordnance Factory Medak. This development complements the Coast Guard's efforts to enhance its operational capabilities with locally sourced equipment.
The MoU with JSP signifies a crucial step towards self-reliance in India's shipbuilding sector, promoting the use of indigenous resources while supporting local industries. The collaboration is expected to improve the efficiency and quality of the Coast Guard's fleet, contributing to the nation's broader maritime security objectives.
