India Ship Technology Centre Inaugurated at IMU Visakhapatnam Campus.

The India Ship Technology Centre was inaugurated recently at the Indian Maritime University (IMU) Visakhapatnam campus, marking a significant milestone for the country’s shipbuilding sector. The centre, established at a cost of ₹305 crore, aims to enhance the capabilities of the Indian shipbuilding industry, Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said during the virtual inauguration from IMU’s headquarters in Chennai.

The centre will serve as a common platform for the shipbuilding industry, offering access to shared facilities, skill development for future personnel, and fostering a productive ecosystem for ship design, research and development, and engineering. “This marks a new chapter for our nation’s Atmanirbharta in ship technology,” Sonowal remarked during his address at the 10th convocation of the Indian Maritime University.

The minister also highlighted the significant progress made in the ports sector since 2014, citing investments in infrastructure improvement, modernization, and mechanization. He noted that Indian ports now boast an average turnaround time of 0.9 days, outperforming advanced maritime nations such as the US, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, and Singapore.
