Ikea India to Close R-City Mumbai Store by Mid-2024

Ikea India has announced its decision to cease operations at its store located in R-City Mall, Mumbai, by mid this year. This move signals the Swedish retail giant's decision to consolidate its Mumbai operations to Ikea Worli and Ikea Navi Mumbai, along with focusing on its e-commerce segment.

Initially opened in 2022 as part of Ikea's strategy to experiment with smaller format concepts in India, the R-City store faced challenges in offering the complete brand experience due to layout and design constraints.

However, employees currently working at the R-City store will not be adversely affected by this decision. They will be provided with opportunities to transition to other stores operated by Ikea.

In a statement, Ikea India explained, "This strategic decision reflects the insights we've gained regarding customer experience and is aligned with our vision of building a leaner and more agile retail business in the country. It allows us to consolidate our Mumbai operations to Ikea Worli, Ikea Navi Mumbai, and our online platform, while also exploring new avenues for future growth."

The company emphasized its commitment to Mumbai's growth by focusing on newer omni-channel formats, developing Ikea Navi Mumbai into a prominent retail destination, expanding physical presence in Pune, and enhancing online accessibility across Maharashtra.

Ensuring the well-being of its employees remains a top priority for Ikea India. The company is dedicated to facilitating a smooth transition for its staff members and providing them with equal growth opportunities within the Ikea family.

Furthermore, Ikea has recently expanded its doorstep delivery services to 62 new districts across four states, including Maharashtra. Additionally, plans are underway to commence e-commerce operations in Delhi within a year before the store launch in the region. Ingka Centres, the shopping center division of Ikea's parent company Ingka Group, is also set to open Lykli Gurugram meeting center by late 2025, with another facility in Noida in development.
