Hooghly Met Coke installs fisrt module of coke ovens

Kolkata: Hooghly Met Coke & Power Co Ltd, a Joint Venture between Tata Steel Ltd and WBIDC, installed its first module of coke ovens.

The coke ovens were lighted by T Mukherjee, deputy managing director (steel), and chairman, Hooghly Met Coke & Power Co, along with Lakshman Seth, member of Parliament.

The company is in its advanced stage of implementing its greenfield project of setting up a standalone coke ovens complex along with power plant at Haldia in West Bengal.

It is designed to manufacture 1.6 million ton of metallurgical coke along with 120MW of power from process waste heat.

The Rs 1,800 crore project was an integrated project, comprising coke ovens and power plant.

However, for reasons of expertise, the power generation plant was handed over to Tata Power Co on November 8, 2006.

The ground-breaking ceremony was done by West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on February 18, 2006.
