Highways Department to execute 129 road projects.

The State government has sanctioned Rs. 101.56 crore for taking up various road development work in the district in 2015-16 under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP).

According to sources in the Highways Department, 129 works are to be taken up under the programme in the district this financial year.

The department will shortly take up improvements on the 4.8-km stretch between Tiruverumbur and Vengur, which leads to Kallanai.

The work has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 2 crore this year under the programme. Tenders for the project have been called, the sources said.

The department had taken up work on strengthening the Tiruchi-Grand Anicut Road along the Cauvery bank at a cost of Rs. 39.5 crore sanctioned under the programme in 2014-15.

Prominent among the other works to be taken up under the programme was the development of the 3-km-long damaged stretch of the Tiruchi-Thuraiyur Road near Nochiyam.

Repairing the road has been a felt need of the local people.

A portion of the K.K. Nagar Road will be developed under the programme. A short stretch of the road, running for 1.5 km between K.K. Nagar Road Arch to Sabari Mills has been widened by the Highways Department. The remaining stretch of the road up to Rajaram Salai would now be widened this year.

A new bridge would be built across the Koraiyar on the Tiruchi-Dindigul highway under the programme this year at an approximate cost of Rs.4.9 crore.

The project is under investigation and estimates are to be prepared soon, the sources said.

The Department was engaged in widening the city stretch of the Dindigul Highway.

The Crawford Road and a short stretch of the Karur Road near Kalaignar Arivalayam would be widened utilising funds sanctioned under the programme.
