Focus on Odisha for Small Hydro Power Projects.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has tagged Odisha as a focus State for development of small hydro power (SHP) projects over next five years.

While the Centre is set to announce a National Mission for SHP on the lines of National Solar Mission, projects to the tune of over 750 MW capacity are being envisaged for Odisha, said Advisor to the Ministry Praveen Saxena while addressing mediapersons at the Third Odisha Solar Conference organised by TiE Bhubaneswar recently.
The projects would include SHPs at canals, barrages, streams and river systems besides individual households at irrigation channels.

The way forward is through private enterprise. Old projects would be renovated and new projects taken up by tapping the available resources and sites. The country has the advanced technology for optimum power generation through SHPs which can be readily implemented.
