DVC: LoA for 1,600 MW Chandrapura Power Project by Year-End 2025.

The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is poised to issue a Letter of Award (LoA) by the end of 2025 for a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired power project in Chandrapura, Jharkhand. This ambitious undertaking is a proposed joint venture between the state-run power utility DVC and coal giant Coal India.

The two public sector undertakings formally solidified their collaboration in April by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the brownfield project. This expansion will see the addition of two 800 MW power units, significantly augmenting the capacity of the existing Chandrapura thermal power station, which currently operates with two 250 MW units.

DVC Chairman S. Suresh Kumar, speaking on Friday, confirmed the progress. "We have signed a formal agreement with Coal India for this brownfield project, which will be set up on our land," Kumar stated. He added, "A LoA is likely to be issued by this year-end. Around 38 months will be needed for completion of the construction work. This project is expected to be fully commissioned by 2030."

The new 1,600 MW capacity is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the growing power demands of the region. The project's "ultra-supercritical" technology signifies a commitment to higher efficiency and reduced emissions compared to older coal-fired power plants, aligning with modern environmental standards for thermal power generation. The collaboration between DVC and Coal India aims to leverage their respective expertise to ensure the timely and successful execution of this significant energy infrastructure project.
