College of Fisheries gets Rs 100-mn for research

Mangalore: The Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University has got more than Rs 10-crore-worth research and development projects under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), according to Dr Y. Basavaraju, Dean, College of Fisheries, Mangalore.

College of Fisheries comes under the Bidar-based university.

Speaking at the launch of the projects in Mangalore, the Dean said the College of Fisheries is implementing a major chunk of these projects.

An amount of Rs 1.02 crore has been earmarked for a project on utilisation of value-added marine and fresh water fishes along Karnataka coast.

The second project, Community-based fisheries entrepreneurship for women groups in coastal Karnataka, has been earmarked Rs 20.60 lakh.

The third project focuses on creation of awareness and mass training programme on coastal and marine fisheries for fisher folk. The outlay for this project is Rs 73.40 lakh.

The fourth project focuses on the farmers of Uttara Kannada district.

The Rs 1.38-crore project will focus on integrated paddy-cum-shrimp culture to improve the livelihood of farmers.

The two other projects allotted to College of Fisheries are improvement and propagation of indigenous fish species (Rs 99.66 lakh) and ornamental fish culture for rural livelihood, self-employment and poverty alleviation (Rs 91.56 lakh).
