Coal India’s Gevra Block in Chhattisgarh Set to Emerge as World’s Largest Mine by Next Year.
Coal India’s Gevra mine is set to become the world’s top coal-producing mine next year, with output projected to reach 63 million tonnes, surpassing leading mines in the United States, a senior company official said recently.
The Gevra mine is operated by South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India, and is currently India’s largest opencast coal mine.
Operational since 1981, the mine is expected to produce 56 million tonnes in the current financial year. It has already secured environmental clearance to ramp up production capacity to 70 million tonnes per annum, paving the way for further expansion.
