Coal India Limited to Develop Syngas Projects for Power, DRI and Fertilizer Sectors.

Coal India Limited to Develop Syngas Projects for Power, DRI and Fertilizer Sectors.

Coal India Limited is planning to establish coal-to-syngas production facilities either at pithead locations or near key consuming industries such as fertiliser plants, direct-reduced iron (DRI) units and gas-based power plants amid disruptions in gas supplies linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict, sources said.

The state-owned company, which contributes more than 80 per cent of India’s domestic coal production, has already initiated steps to develop coal-to-syngas infrastructure as part of its diversification strategy.

According to sources, the initiative aligns with the National Mission on Coal Gasification and the government’s broader objective of strengthening domestic chemical and feedstock security.

The proposed facilities are aimed at meeting the growing demand for syngas from industries dependent on natural gas, particularly gas-based power plants, DRI units and fertiliser manufacturers, at a time when global energy supply chains remain under pressure.
