Chatterjee Group Weighs Entry into Commercial Sodium-Ion Battery Production.
The Chatterjee Group is exploring the possibility of entering the commercial production of indigenous sodium-ion batteries, with a focus on manufacturing battery cells, the core component of the technology.
The interest follows a recent breakthrough by scientists at the Research Institute for Sustainable Energy (RISE) under TCG-CREST, an institution established by the Purnendu Chatterjee-led group. Researchers there have developed a high-speed-charging sodium-ion (Na-ion) battery using only materials sourced within India.
The newly developed battery can charge up to 94% in just five minutes and offers an energy density of about 180 watt-hour per kilogram, placing it on par with leading lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
