Cattle Semen Production Unit Inaugurated at Gujarat's Banas Dairy.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel recently virtually inaugurated a modern semen production unit at Banas Dairy in Dama village, Banaskantha district. The facility, featuring India's first Make-in-India semen sex-sorting machine, aims to enhance cattle breeding by producing high-pedigree, high-milk-yielding animals while addressing the issue of stray cattle.
Speaking at the event, Shankarbhai Chaudhary, Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly and Chairman of Banas Dairy, called the opening of the country’s first indigenous semen-sorting centre a historic milestone for farmers. He credited the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for developing this homegrown technology. Farmers can now access semen doses at just ₹100, making advanced breeding more affordable.
Advancing Genetic Breeding for Higher Milk Yield
With Banaskantha’s cattle population exceeding 28 lakh, genetic enhancement plays a critical role in improving livestock quality. The Dama Semen Production Unit, spread across 20 acres, is an A-grade semen station employing advanced scientific techniques like Genomics Breeding Value, Milk Yield Competition, Progeny Testing, and Pedigree Selection to breed disease-free bulls and calves. The facility will produce 25 lakh high-quality semen doses annually.
Make-in-India Innovation: GauSort Technology
Under the Make-in-India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, NDDB has developed the GauSort Technology-based Semen Sex-Sorting Machine, now operational at the Dama Semen Station.
Key benefits of this technology include:
- 90% of newborn cattle will be female, boosting dairy farmers' milk production and income.
- Lower production costs—semen dose costs will reduce from ₹730 to ₹280 per dose.
- Cheaper access for farmers—semen doses, currently priced at ₹100, will soon be available for just ₹50.
Additionally, Banas Dairy has made strides in embryo transplant technology, further supporting the Prime Minister’s vision of improving India's dairy sector.
