"Cabinet Approves Construction of 20 Million New Rural Homes"
The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of 20 million new houses in rural areas under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana — Grameen for the fiscal years 2025-2028. The approval maintains the current per-unit assistance levels of ₹120,000 for plains and ₹130,000 for hills.
Although there had been discussions about increasing the assistance to ₹200,000 in plains and ₹220,000 in hills due to rising construction costs, this proposal was not adopted.
The new housing initiative will supplement nearly 30 million homes already built over the past decade under the Modi administration. A total financial outlay of ₹3.06 trillion has been approved for rural housing over FY25 to FY29. This includes a central share of ₹2.05 trillion and a state share of ₹1 trillion.
An official statement confirmed that the unit cost of assistance will remain at ₹120,000 for plains and ₹130,000 for the Northeastern region and hill states.
