Baner–Shivajinagar Flyover Wing to Open in November, Full Project Completion by December.
Commuters on Ganeshkhind Road and from University Chowk toward Baner and Pashan can expect relief in the coming months as authorities plan to open the Baner–Shivajinagar wing of the ongoing flyover project in November.
The other two wings of the flyover, catering to traffic from Shivajinagar toward Baner and Pashan, are expected to be ready by December, officials said. Work on all wings has reached advanced stages, and pending tasks are being fast-tracked to complete the prolonged project.
The arterial route, used by thousands of commuters daily, has been plagued by congestion, worsened by multiple infrastructure projects. While the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is executing the flyover at University Chowk, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is widening the road to streamline traffic and accommodate more vehicles.
One wing of the flyover, serving traffic from Aundh toward Shivajinagar, was opened in August, providing partial relief. Commuters, however, continue to face delays, particularly from Senapati Bapat Road to Aundh, Baner, and Pashan, as well as in the opposite direction.
Ashok Kale, a regular commuter, said, “Crossing University Chowk was extremely challenging during the monsoon due to slow vehicle movement and detours. We hope the opening of all wings over the next couple of months will improve traffic flow significantly.”
In addition, PMC plans to widen the remaining stretch of Ganeshkhind Road, from RBI Chowk to Sancheti Hospital, starting November. While the civic body has acquired some land plots, discussions are ongoing with private landowners and government agencies to secure about 50 more plots needed for the expansion.
Civic officials noted that the stretch from RBI Chowk to University Chowk has nearly been widened. A commuter emphasized the importance of sticking to deadlines, urging both PMC and PMRDA to avoid further delays in completing the flyover and road widening works.
