2,200 km roads to be upgraded at Rs 1,139 crore

With Rs. 4,245 crore proposed for the upgradation of 8,663 kilometre of rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Phase III, deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot recently announced that in the first batch of Phase III, around 2,200 kilometre of roads will be upgraded in the state at a budget of Rs. 1,139 crore.

For this, the union ministry of rural development has given approval to 237 proposals of the state government recently.

Pilot informed that for the development and upgradation of rural roads in the state, the Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing 392 more proposals for the development of 3,740 kms of rural roads for the second batch of the third phase.

Under the third phase of PMGSY, Rajasthan has been given a target to upgrade 8,663 kms of rural roads in the next five years. Rajasthan has secured second place in the country in obtaining approval for the upgradation of roads in the third phase.

“For the third phase of PMGSY, roads have been selected for upgradation on the basis of rural population, agriculture market, transport, infrastructure, connectivity to schools and medical/health facilities in the state. To upgrade the proposed roads in the third phase, widening of roads, strengthening the width of single-to-intermediate lanes, quality improvement and bridge construction will be done,” said Pilot.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot recently allocated Rs. 6,808 crore for Public Works Department (PWD), headed by his deputy Sachin Pilot, while presenting the state budget. Of the total, Rs 400 crore has been allocated for renewal and upgradation of severely damaged roads.
