"Tata Power completes commissioning of SJVN’s 1 GW solar project in Rajasthan under the DCR category."
Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL) has commissioned its largest solar power project to date—a 1-gigawatt (GW) plant in Rajasthan for Navratna CPSE SJVN Limited. The project, spanning the Bandarwala and Karnisar Bhatiyan sites in Bikaner, will supply electricity to Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand.
Valued at over ₹5,500 crore and compliant with the domestic content requirement (DCR) policy, the project has propelled TPREL’s total renewable utility-scale capacity to 11.6 GW, including 4.9 GW executed as third-party EPC. All 2.4 million solar modules used were manufactured at Tata Power’s TP Solar Limited facility in Tirunelveli, reflecting the company’s commitment to domestic manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.
The electricity generated from the project has been allocated to state utilities—500 MW to Rajasthan Urja Vikas and IT Services Limited (RUVITL), 300 MW to Jammu & Kashmir Power Limited (JKPL), and 200 MW to Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL). In its first year, the plant is expected to generate around 2,454.84 million units of green electricity and reduce nearly 1.74 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
The project was executed in challenging conditions, with temperatures ranging from 3°C in winter to 50°C in summer, difficult terrain, and restricted vehicle access. TPREL deployed advanced DCR-compliant cells, mono bifacial modules, precision ramming techniques, and high-performance inverters designed for extreme weather, ensuring timely and safe completion.
Beyond its technical achievements, the project created significant local impact, training and employing over 300 workers and developing more than 25 local vendors, supporting livelihoods and regional economic growth.
TPREL’s portfolio currently includes 5.8 GW of operational capacity—4.7 GW of solar and 1.1 GW of wind energy—and another 5.8 GW under development, evenly split between solar and wind projects, expected to be completed in phases over the next two years.
The project underscores TPREL’s role in India’s clean energy transition, supporting the country’s target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.
