North Central Railway Completes 100% Electrification of Broad Gauge Network.

The North Central Railway (NCR) zone has achieved full electrification of its broad gauge (BG) network, completing the milestone by the end of February 2025.

With this, NCR now operates an electrified network spanning 3,293.49 route kilometers and 7,614.34 track kilometers. Route kilometers indicate the total railway distance between two points, while track kilometers account for all running tracks, excluding sidings and yards.

The electrification is supported by three 220/132 kV grid substations and 62 traction substations, ensuring a robust electric traction system. NCR plays a crucial role in Indian Railways’ high-density corridors, including the Delhi-Howrah, Delhi-Mumbai, and Delhi-Chennai routes.

The zone’s electrification journey began with the Ghaziabad-Prayagraj-Mughalsarai section between 1965 and 1976, ensuring seamless electric traction on a key corridor. This was followed by the electrification of the Palwal-Mathura section in 1984 and the Mathura-Jhansi-Bina section between 1984 and 1988.

A significant milestone was reached on October 21, 2022, when NCR completed electrification of the final remaining stretch—the Ishanagar-Udaipura section (76 route km) in the Jhansi Division.

With this achievement, Indian Railways' total electrified broad gauge network now stands at 64,547 route kilometers, advancing its goal of energy efficiency and sustainability.
