Karnataka to introduce single window system to clear mining projects.

The Karnataka government has planned to introduce a single window clearance system to expedite applications related to mining related proposals. The system will ensure ease-of-doing business in the mines department and infuse confidence among investors, mines and geology minister Murugesh R Nirani said.

Speaking to reporters after consulting stakeholders on Sunday, the minister said: “We want the departments to go to their (investors) doorstep rather than them waiting to get permission for many years. The only solution to reduce the harassment that investors face to get permits from departments is through establishing a single window agency under the department.”

The government believes the single window agency will help investors to get speedy approval to start the project and generate employment. Investors in the minor minerals sector like sand, stone, and granite, often run from pillar to post to get no objection certificates.

The plan is to set-up two single window clearance committees at the district level and the state level. If the investments are below Rs. 5 crore, the agency headed by deputy commissioners will clear the applications, and in case of projects above Rs. 5 crore mines, a panel headed by the minister will approve the proposals, according to officials.

The state’s commerce and industries department already has a single window clearance system.
