Japan grants over US$ 12 million to Sri Lanka for three development projects

Japan today announced that it will provide over US$ 12.5 million in grant assistance to Sri Lanka for three development projects in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

According to a press release of the Japanese Embassy in Colombo, under the scheme of non-project grant aid for industrial products Japanese Yen 300 million (approximately Rs.455 million) will be provided for procuring a range of equipment manufactured in the Eastern part of Japan that was severely affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, for improving Sri Lanka's curative health care services and enhancing the overall health care services, providing safe drinking water for people in lagging regions and developing the rural road network in order to improve accessibility and connectivity between regions and urban areas.

Under the Project for Rehabilitation of Kilinochchi Water Supply Scheme, Japanese Yen 677 million (approximately Rs. 1.026 billion) will be provided for restoration of a water supply system in Kilinochchi District to provide safe drinking water supply and improve the health of the residents in the area.

Another Japanese Yen 48.4 million (approximately Rs.73 million) will be provided for a project to purchase and install Japanese language learning equipment at the University of Kelaniya and Sabaragamuwa University. The project is aimed at modernizing and expanding the variety of equipment to enhance the standard of Japanese language teaching and learning at the two universities.
